QUIPS Bursary Application – SSMU Clubs Portal

This form is to apply to the QUIPS Bursary. Decisions about funding are made every two weeks (monthly during the summer), unless otherwise notified. Funding meetings are held on Wednesdays, starting September 13th.

The bursary is for needs based funding for queer students (grad, undergrad, and part-time) and recent alumni (within a year of graduation), such as hydro, internet, groceries, rent, medical costs, etc. It is also for queer-connected community grassroots projects that otherwise would not be funded. It is for the queer community, by the queer community.

All confidential information will only be seen by the GSC (Gender and Sexuality Commissioner), and will be edited out of your application (legal names, etc) during committee discussion.
Please contact the GSC four days in advance if you have questions. You may contact later but might not get a response in time, though I will try.

When applying, know we are able to give out 5000$ total at a time. You may request this amount, but do not rely on our ability to give the entire amount to you at a given time, as funding is divided with all applicants in that round.

A note that we do not prioritise paying for student loans, non-emergency or research related transit (ex: uber to move house), tuition, or new computers. You may still apply for these but this is a disclaimer that they will not be prioritised.

This bursary is for queer students and community members who fit under the guidelines. Are you aware of this, and do you self-identify as this? *

This application does not seek to have you share trauma to receive support. This section is to provide any context you feel to be meaningful to the application, but it is not mandatory and your application will be considered regardless. Examples would include issues due to the pandemic, a job loss, difficulty getting funding elsewhere, or something else. You may be as vague as you wish in providing this information if you choose to do so. *

Similar to the previous question, this bursary is mandated to prioritize QTBIPOC, queer people with disabilities, and other marginalized queer people. If you would like to self-identify due to these, please write that here. You may be as specific or not as you wish.

If applying for a community project please write a description of your purpose and how the funds will be used. Please include a description of how the project aligns with the mandate of QUIPS as well as a breakdown of the project’s budget and other sources of funding, both confirmed and pending.

Community project continued: Please describe how this project will improve the experience of others in the queer community in Montreal or other marginalized communities. This can be in terms of education, raising awareness, radial work, community support and workshops, grassroots research, as examples. Funded projects can be asked for as examples if you want ideas for how past projects have worked.

Please provide a detailed and specific budget about what the money would be used for. Use exact amounts, to the best of your ability. *

What is the total amount of money you are looking for? This can be an estimate. As the 5000 is divided amoung all applicants each round, know that you may ask for that amount but do not expect it. *

If the amount you are looking for is higher than your budget has listed, what is your reasonoing for the extra money? Unless a reason is given, your request for extra money without explanation is unlikely to be granted.

Do you have concerns about conflicts of interest with someone that might be sitting on the QUIPS Committee to give out funding? A list of membership organisations can be found in the terms of reference linked at the start of this application

Please provide supporting documentation, for example, a photo of a lease, a hydro bill, emails about a bill or issue, etc. Only include medical diagnoses if it feels important to you to do so, we are mostly looking for specific bills/expenses/paperwork. *
